Maths

At Overchurch Junior School, we believe that every child can achieve deep, sustainable mathematical understanding.

We cultivate confident, resilient, and resourceful mathematicians by embracing a Mastery approach. We aim to ensure that  every pupil secures fundamental knowledge before progressing. Our children will focus on making connections across mathematical domains to enable deep knowledge retention.  Ultimately, our pupils will be able to think flexibly, reason mathematically, and apply their profound conceptual understanding to solve complex and unfamiliar problems.

Underlying Principles:

  • Following the Maths No Problem scheme, ensuring our teaching is rooted in the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (C-P-A) framework, where manipulatives are essential tools for exploration and conceptual development.
  • We dedicate time daily to the explicit teaching of arithmetic fluency.
  • LKS2 uses Times Tables Number Sense to ensure fluency of times tables.
  • Strategic over-learning and recapping of concepts, alongside effective pre-teaching to prepare pupils for new learning.
