Intent 

At Overchurch Junior School, we encourage all pupils to produce expressive pieces of work on their journeys to become creative, imaginative and confident artists. Through our Art and Design curriculum map, we aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils to become artists, designers and architects. We intend for our pupils to explore, record and evaluate their creative ideas whilst continuing to develop their skills in a range of mediums. These include drawing, painting, sculpting, collage and printing. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, history, English and geography, ensuring that children make real life links. 

Implementation 

The teaching and implementation of Art and Design at Overchurch Junior School is based on the National Curriculum and a skills based approach, encouraging children to be explorative. Our curriculum builds on previous learning and ensures a clear progression of skills throughout the school. 

Our curriculum ensures that children have a week dedicated to Art and Design each term. This allows children to build on previous learning throughout the week, providing both support and challenge for our learners. We explore a variety of artists through our ‘observe and appraise’ each term to enrich the children’s knowledge of art in history, techniques and styles of art. Progression of skills is evident in our children’s sketchbooks as they move though our spiral curriculum building on skills and techniques. 

To ensure mastery in Art at Overchurch Junior School we ensure the children have access to a range of materials during each skill (e.g. drawing with charcoal, pencil, biro, chalk). 

We want to ensure that Art and Design  is embedded in our whole school curriculum and that opportunities for collaborative learning and exploring different styles and techniques in art are always taken. To ensure this, children are given many opportunities to express themselves through different means including termly exhibition projects, extra curricular art clubs and homework such as Black History Month’s African Art. 

Impact

At Overchurch Junior School, our children are engaged and enthused by Art, they are enthusiastic to discuss different styles of artwork and artists they’ve explored throughout the curriculum. It is our aim that children will retain key knowledge and skills taught, using techniques taught to create imaginative pieces of artwork throughout their school journey. At Overchurch Junior School, we are able to measure the impact that Art and Design has had for all children by: 

• Teacher assessment of which objectives are met within each lesson and overall, at the end of each unit. 
• Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning through observations.
• Images of the children’s practical learning. 
• Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice). 
• Moderation staff meetings where pupil’s books are scrutinised.

By the time children leave Overchurch Junior School, we want them to have developed a passion for art and creativity, working both independently and collaboratively. We aim for the children to be able to apply skills learned, using a range of tools and techniques whilst confidently responding to their own work as well as others’.
